Muhammad al-Yadali al-Dimmani

The eminent scholar, al-‘Allāmah Muḥammad al-Yadālī (1096–1166 AH), was born in the year 1096 AH near a well-known well called Bīr Tandagasm in the ولاية (region) of Trarza. His birth came approximately ten years after the famous Sharrab war, a conflict whose flames engulfed the Maghāfir (Banū Ḥassān) in Trarza, as well as several Zāwāyā (scholarly communities), particularly the tribe of al-Yadālī.

It was within these difficult ظروف (circumstances) that al-Yadālī grew up, opening his eyes to a turbulent reality that deeply influenced him. This impact is clearly reflected in his intellectual and cultural works, whether أدبية (literary) or شرعية (religious).

Lineage (Nasab)

He is: Muḥammad ibn al-Mukhtār ibn Muḥammad Sa‘īd ibn al-Mukhtār, from the tribe of Idūdāy al-Yadāliyyīn, which belongs to the well-known confederation of Tashamshama. This alliance consists of Idīqb, Idgabhani, Idājfāg, Idūdāy, and the Dimmaniyyīn.

His Scholarly Status

Shaykh Muḥammad al-Yadālī is regarded as one of the four greatest scholars known in al-Muntabadh al-Qaṣī (the remote region of Shinqīṭ). He authored works in Tafsīr al-Qur’ān, ‘Ilm al-Kalām, Taṣawwuf, and Tārīkh, combining between al-ma‘qūl wa al-manqūl (rational and transmitted sciences).
Due to his remarkable dedication to writing, he would travel extensively in search of paper during a time when it was scarce. He was distinguished by a rare talent (mawhibah nādirah) and a sharp intellect (dhakā’ mutaqid), which greatly shaped his early education. This natural brilliance was strengthened by a relentless determination (himmah ‘āliyyah) that knew no حدود (limits).
For this reason, some researchers described him as “rajul ‘iṣāmī” — a self-made scholar who built his knowledge through his own effort. He remained deeply devoted to learning and scholarship until he became one of the four unparalleled scholars of the Shinqīṭ region, as noted by Aḥmad ibn al-Amīn.

His Sufi Orientation

Al-Yadālī is considered among the early pioneers of al-Taṣawwuf al-Shinqīṭī, those who infused their intellectual life with a distinctly Ṣūfī character. This spiritual inclination is evident throughout his works, especially in:

al-Dhahab al-Ibrīz (his Tafsīr)
Kitāb al-Af‘ā
Khātimat al-Taṣawwuf
Scholars who wrote about his life highlighted many aspects of his Ṣūfī path, including al-Nābighah al-Qalāwī in his book al-Najm al-Thāqib fī ba‘ḍ mā li’l-Yadālī min al-Manāqib.

His Works (Ta’ālīf)

Al-Yadālī authored numerous works across diverse fields, demonstrating his high scholarly rank. He is among the earliest Shinqīṭī authors whose writings have reached us—if not the very first. Among his most notable works are:

al-Dhahab al-Ibrīz fī Kitāb Allāh al-‘Azīz (Qur’anic exegesis)
Khātimat al-Taṣawwuf along with its commentary
Shiyam al-Zawāyā – on the ethics of the Zāwāyā of Tashamshama
Fawā’id al-Fawā’id – a theological work in the Ash‘arī tradition
al-Naṣīḥah li-Abnā’ ‘Umūmatih
al-Ṣawārim al-Hinduwāniyyah fī Radd Shubuh al-Jīm al-Sūdāniyyah
Ḥillat al-Siyar fī Ansāb Khayr al-Warā – on the Sīrah of the Prophet ﷺ
Risālat al-Laf‘ah
Amr al-Walī Nāṣir al-Dīn
al-Murabbī ‘alā Sharḥ Ṣalāt Rabbī, and other writings.
