Birth and Early Life

Sheikh Usman Bashir was born in 1932 in the Chediyar Kuda area of Kano Municipal. He grew up in an environment rooted in discipline, education, and commerce. After the passing of his parents, Hajiya Bara Alhassan Dantata (who was his mother's co-wife) took him to the Koki quarters and continued to raise and care for him.
Educational Background
The Sheikh attained profound religious knowledge, starting with the Holy Qur'an and extending to various Islamic sciences including Arabic Language, Jurisprudence (Fiqh), Hadith, Exegesis (Tafsir), and Sufism (Tariqa).

His Teachers Include:
Sheikh Abubakar Ingawa: The father of Mallam Nasidi Abubakar; Sheikh Usman spent many years studying various disciplines under him.
Sheikh Tijjani Uthman (Zangon Bare-bari): He was his primary mentor in the Tariqa (Sufi path) and spiritual upbringing, as well as a teacher of Tafsir and Hadith.
Sheikh Atiku Sanka: A key teacher who, in addition to regular daily lessons, dedicated every Thursday and Friday solely to the Sheikh's private instruction.
He also studied at the famous Madabo school and several other centers of learning.
Ancestry and Family Ties
His paternal great-grandfather, Sheikh Ibrahim Balarabe, originally came from Medina. His son, Mallam Mahmud, became his successor (Khalifa) and was highly respected across Northern Nigeria, particularly by traditional rulers.

Because of this high regard, the Emir of Hadejia, Muhammad Hassan (the Martyr), gave his daughter, Hajiya Habiba, in marriage to Mallam Mahmud’s son, Mallam Bashir (the father of Sheikh Usman). Similarly, there was a deep friendship between Emir of Kano Abbas and Mallam Mahmud. The Emir trusted Mallam Mahmud so much that he entrusted him with the education and upbringing of his children, even building a special residence called Kudandan within the Palace for this purpose.
Religious Struggle and Business
Sheikh Usman was closely associated with Alhaji Amadu Alhassan Dantata in business. He traveled extensively, particularly to Arab countries, and spent some time in the Maiduguri region, balancing commercial activities with the propagation of Islam.

Key Contributions:
Fityanul Islam: Along with Mallam Mudi Salga and a few others, he was instrumental in founding this organization and served as its first General Secretary.
Hilaqu Zikrillah: He personally traveled to Senegal to seek permission from Sheikh Abdullahi Niasse to establish this association. It was officially launched in 1981 at the Arzai School.
Sheikh Abdullahi Niasse instructed him to use the association to spread the remembrance of Allah, propagate the Tariqa, convert people to Islam, and promote mutual aid.
Relationship with the "Sahibul Wakhti"
Through his teacher, Sheikh Tijjani Uthman, Sheikh Usman met Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse (Kaulaha) and developed a very close bond with him. Sheikh Ibrahim eventually instructed other Nigerian scholars to consult Sheikh Usman Bashir on matters of knowledge and the Tariqa.

Sheikh Usman was known for his service to Sheikh Ibrahim’s family, famously introducing the "Zanna Bukar" caps to Senegal. As a sign of their close bond, Sheikh Ibrahim gave his daughter, Sayyidatul Hajja Ummuhani Niasse, to him in marriage. They were blessed with ten children.

Death and Legacy
Sheikh Usman Bashir passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2007 (2nd Dhu al-Qi'dah 1428 AH) at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. He was buried at the cemetery of his mentor, Sheikh Tijjani Uthman Zangon Bare-bari, in Kano.
He left behind 35 children (10 sons and 25 daughters). May Allah renew His mercy upon him and grant him the highest reward. Amin.
